Trbovlje Transloading Station

Client/investor: Termoelektrarna Trbovlje, d.o.o.

Project category: Transport infrastructure

Project timeline: 2009

Project status: The project has been completed

The Termoelektrarna Trbovlje thermal power plant needed to change the method of delivery, transloading and distribution of coal by rail because of the modernisation of the technological process of fuel supply. The project will be carried out with no interruption to railway transport that will therefore proceed alongside construction work in one of the busiest parts of corridor V of the Trans-European railway network TEN-T.

Project activities

  • Special piles were used for the foundation of the transloading station plateau.
  • A device for the horizontal unloading of railway wagons carrying fuel was installed that meets the stringent criteria for granulated material transloading.
  • A multi-level transport system was constructed with control and management performed from a central location.
  • An electric-relay signalling and safety device was added featuring both internal and external elements.
  • The electric catenary at the station was upgraded.
  • All work was performed with the railway transport proceeding without interruption.

Presentation of the project entitled Trbovlje Transloading Station

Construction work

After the removal of the existing transloading station, a new hydraulic unit was constructed for feeding and unloading the fuel. Special pile walls needed to be constructed. The project also comprised the installation of an operator’s command-and-control station and a distribution belt conveyor, as well as the arrangement of drainage and the installation of manipulation equipment.

Work on track devices

Several type 49 E1 rails were laid using the K-clip fastening method, while the fastening system employing SKL 14 clips was used to connect several tracks constructed with grooved rails (57 Ri) and concrete sleepers (W Ri 180 system).

Owing to the technology of rail transport, we installed temporary switch points with multiple ballast regulation and tamping. During the course of the work and after completion, it was necessary to relocate and reinstall special rail indications in accordance with the railway transport and signalling rules.

Work on signalling and safety devices

The changed rail network required changes to be made to external and internal elements of signalling and safety devices.

We installed border track signals, miniature shunting signals and switch motors.

We built in relay modules for the switching group of shunting signals into the signalling and safety device as well as modules for MTS border track signals.

We had to expand the interlock display using mosaic elements and implement the procedures for the testing and integration of new devices into the existing system for the control and management of railway transport.

We relocated the self-supporting fiber optic cable over the entire length of the construction site and installed telecommunication posts for the station.

Work on the catenary

Because of the interventions performed on track devices and the substructure of the railway line, we relocated the manipulation and main tracks of the railway line, which we electrified with a DC 3000 V power supply system. We installed M110 catenary poles and a semi-compensation tensioning device, as well as overhead contact lines, power supply lines and safety lines of various lengths and cross-sections. Grounding connections between metallic elements and the return conductors were made within the scope of the above tasks.

We implemented the project to the highest quality standards and within the envisaged time. On the date the technical acceptance procedure was carried out, the operating permit was also issued so that rail transport could proceed without interruption and limitations.
