INTRODUCTION OF THE DIGITAL RADIO SYSTEM (GSM-R) TO THE SLOVENIAN RAILWAY NETWORK

Design and installation of the GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) system, which enables uniform communication between all transport providers and railway infrastructure operators in the EU.

The project involved the development of executive designs for the optical system, power supply system, base stations, transmission system and equipment for 134 railway stations and for the installation of command centres. After the investor’s approval of the executive designs, all works were carried out on the existing network while railway transport remained uninterrupted.

In order to install this system in Slovenia, the project consisted of the laying of 1,218 km of cable routes along the entire public railway infrastructure, 343 km of underground conduits were built to provide electric power supply to base stations, 129 new or upgraded electrical connectors were installed, 356 receiver and transmitter base stations or repeaters were built. Alongside of the above, the transmission network, dispatch system, recording system, CCTV system and the central system controlling the performance of all systems were installed. Manual GSMR devices were handed over to the operator’s 1,800 employees, and fitted on 50 vehicles of the operator of the public railway infrastructure.
